Odell Shepard

Odell Shepard ( born July 22, 1884 in Sterling, Illinois, † July 19, 1967 in New London, Connecticut ) was an American writer and politician. Between 1941 and 1943 he was Deputy Governor of the State of Connecticut.

Career

Odell Shepard studied at Harvard University. He then taught for some time at Yale University, the subject English. Between 1917 and 1946 he was a member of the faculty of Trinity College in Hartford. During this time he also published works of famous American writers, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He has also written several books and treatises themselves. For his biography Pedlar 's Progress: The Life of Bronson Alcott, he received in 1938 the Pulitzer Prize in biography or autobiography.

Politically, Shepard joined the Democratic Party. In 1940 he was elected to the side of Robert A. Hurley for Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut. This post he held 1941-1943. Yet he was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. Odell Shepard died on July 19, 1967 in New London.
