Odemira part of the Alentejo Litoral and the district of Beja.

Geography

Odemira is located about 100 km southwest of the district capital of Beja, and is about 10 km east from the Atlantic coast. The coastal area of the region is crossed by the River Mira and is part of the natural park Parque Natural do Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina.

History

Findings and excavations evidence of a settlement of the place before the arrival of the Romans. The Moors conquered the region from the early 8th century and built fortifications here. During the Reconquista, it came in 1166 with the Kingdom of Portugal. In 1256 Odemira received city rights ( Foral ) for the first time. 1265 was the place new fortifications that King D.Dinis in 1319 was expanding. Renewed in 1510 King Manuel I, the city rights. In the course of administrative reform by the Liberal Revolution of 1822 and the Miguelistenkrieg Odemira has significantly expanded the mid-19th century.

Culture, attractions and regular events

The village lies on the edge of the Parque Natural do Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, a nature reserve which runs along the entire south-western coast of Portugal. Trails are created.

Since 1996, the Festival of Southwest is held in the community Zambujeira do Mar, which attracts tens of thousands of guests from all over the world. 2012 were from 1 to 5 August Ben Harper, Eddie Vedder, David Guetta, The Roots, the Thievery Corporation, The Vaccines and more a guest.

Architectural monuments include various community cemeteries, bridges, historic public buildings and private residences, old wells, the Farol do Cabo Sardão, wind and water mills, and a variety of religious buildings. Circle

Odemira is the administrative center of the same circle, and part of the Alentejo Litoral; this is a sub-region in Portugal. It is geographically the largest county in Portugal. In the north it is the counties of Sines and Santiago do Cacém, bounded on the east by the county of Ourique, on the south by Monchique, Silves and Aljezur, and to the west is the Atlantic Ocean.

Traffic

The railway line runs through the Linha do Sul Odemira, with multiple breakpoints. The national highways N123 and N263 cross Odemira and connect the circle to 37 km away IC1 and the A2 motorway about 60 km away.

Odemira is integrated into the national bus network of speech Expressos.
