Oderzo

Oderzo is an Italian city in the Veneto, Treviso province, with 20 285 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and economic

The city is located about 28 km north-east of Treviso.

It is located near several highways (auto trade) and also has a small railway station.

For the economy are agriculture, trade and small businesses and tourism is important.

History

Oderzo is the ancient Opitergium, which was already inhabited during the Iron Age in the 9th century BC. The tribe of the Veneti had a settlement here. When the city has long belonged to the Roman Empire, it was conquered 170 during the Marcomanni wars of the Marcomanni and Quadi, but recovered under Marcus Aurelius by the Romans. In the year 667 Opitergium was destroyed by the Lombards under Grimoald ( Grimualdo ). In medieval times, today Oderzo arose.

Attractions

  • The Cathedral (Duomo), the church was built in 1235, in 1400 was the present building, which was then still restored several times. The Gothic church has a beautiful rose window;
  • The " Torresin ", also called " Torre Littoria " a renewed in the 1930s, the gate tower;
  • Several archaeological remains from antiquity;
  • Beekeeping Museum (Museo dell'apicoltura ) in the village Piavon.
