Odessa is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Ector County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.
Geography
The city is located on the Texas and Pacific Railway, Interstate 20, U.S. Highway 80 and U.S. Highway 385 in the west of Texas, is about 80 km from the southeast corner of New Mexico and has a total area of 95.5 km ², of which 0.2 km ² water surface.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 90 943 people in 33 661 households and 23 697 families. The population density was 954.2 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 73.43 % White, 5.88 % African American, 0.77 % Native American, 0.88 % Asian, 0.04 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 16.07 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.93% were of mixed descent, and 41.42 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 33 661 households 37.9 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.6 % were married couples living together. 14.5% were single mothers and 29.6% were non-families. 25.7 % of all households were single-person households and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size amounted to 3.21.
29.8 % of the population were under 18 years old, 10.6 % from 18 to 24, 27.8 % 25-44, 20.0 % from 45 to 64, and 11.8 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 88.6 males.
The median income for a household was $ 31,209, and the median income for a family $ 36,869. Males had a median income of $ 31,115 versus $ 21,743 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,096. 18.6 % of the population and 16.0 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 23.9 % have children under the age of 18 and 14.1 % of those 65 or older.
