Odile of Alsace

The Odilia (also Odile Odile or Ottilie, * 660 in Alsace or Burgundy; † 720 in the monastery Niedermünster at Mont Sainte-Odile ) was an abbess and is venerated as the patron saint of Alsace and of sight. The name Odilia is a minor form of Ottilie and is derived from the Old High German. " Ot " means as much as genetic or possession.

Legend

Her legend is mainly based on a biography, which was created in the 10th century. According to this narrative Odilia was on the High Castle (municipality Obernai, Obernai dt ) born. She was the daughter of the Duke Eticho (also Athich, Attich, Adalrich or Adalricus ) and his wife Bersinda (also called Bethsvinda or Bereswinde ) and was blind. For this reason, her father wanted her to kill; the mother saved her by giving the child to a monastery. Probably it is the monastery of Baume- les -Dames east of Besançon. When she was baptized at the age of twelve years of Erhard of Regensburg, she received the eyesight. She returned to her parents, but had to flee from her father and hide in a cave again. This cave is located, depending on the source, either in Arlesheim (south of Basel ) or in Musbachtal in Freiburg im Breisgau. In both places, a worship until at least the 15th century observed. They later reconciled with her father, her a possession on the High Castle in Alsace - the later Mont Sainte-Odile (French: Mont Ste. -Odile ) - was providing, where they founded a monastery 690. Im also founded their monastery Niedermünster at the foot of Mont Sainte-Odile she died around 720 Her grave is located on the Mont Sainte-Odile. Odile is the most important pilgrimage site of Alsace; the local source is considered helpful in eye disorders.

Historical Biography

Historically attested is the donation of the monastery High Castle by Duke Eticho to his daughter Odile. However, is questionable her birth ( according to the legend on the Mount Sainte-Odile in Obernai), because her father was not witnessed by the Alsace before 673 as Duke, but had possessions in Dijon. The stay in the monastery of Baume- les -Dames during their childhood / adolescence and baptism by Erhard of Regensburg seem credible.
