Odo I, Duke of Burgundy

Called Odo I of the Red or Borel (French Eudes I le Roux, * to 1058, † 1102 in Tarsus ), was a Duke of Burgundy from the Capetian dynasty. He was the son of Henry of Burgundy and his wife Sibyl, a daughter of Count Raimund Berengar I of Barcelona. He followed his older brother, Hugo I. in office after when he retired after the death of his wife to Cluny.

Together with his brother, Robert Bishop of Langres, Odo founded the Abbey of Citeaux, the nucleus of the Cistercian Order. In 1086 he moved with his army to Spain where his uncle, King Alfonso VI. to help of Castile in the fight against the Moors. At the Battle of Sagrajas ( October 23, 1086 ) he was too late and the Siege of Tudela ( 1087) was unsuccessful. In Odo's wake, but was his brother Raymond of Burgundy, who was on this occasion with Urraca, daughter and heiress of King Alfonso, married. Odo's youngest brother Henry was later appointed himself the Count of Portugal, thus the ancestor of the Capetians in Portugal, who ruled until 1853 there.

Odo joined the crusade of 1101, during which he died at Tarsus in Cilicia 1102. His remains were transferred to the home and buried in the Abbey of Citeaux.

Marriage and issue

He was since 1080 with Sibylle (* 1065, † after 1103), daughter of the Count Palatine William I of Burgundy, married, with whom he had four children:
