Odo I, Margrave of the Saxon Ostmark

Hodo I ( also Odo; * 930, † March 13 993 ) was from 965 Margrave of Mark Lausitz, from 966 Graf in Gau Nizizi, 972-974 Count in Gau Zizizi with the Dorfmark Trebnitzgrund and from 974 Graf Nordthüringgau.

Life

Hodo was a relative, perhaps a son of Gero, Margrave of the Ostmark, confidant of King Otto I and educator whose son Otto II. After the division of the Saxon Ostmark immediately after Gero's death, 965, he received the Mark Lausitz dominion assigned.

He spent much time in the defensive battles and the subjugation of the Elbe Slavs on the eastern border of the Ostfrankenreichs. Hodo penetrated in his campaigns against up to the Warta and could temporarily bring the Polans in a certain dependency of the kingdom. But he was then beaten on June 24, 972 of Cidibur, the brother of Prince Mieszko I Polans at the Battle of Zehden near the present town Zehden almost annihilated, which Mieszko reached the security of Poland's western border, and expand towards Pomerania could.

He could not against the claims of Margrave Gero, a son of Thietmar I., enforce the succession of his son Siegfried in the Mark Lausitz.

Hodo died 993 and was buried on the Saale in Nienburg monastery.

Family and descendants

Hodo was married to Frederuno († October 28, 1015 ), which is believed that she was a daughter of Margrave Christian of Serimunt. They had the following children are known by name:

• Siegfried ( † after 1030)
• Hidda, mother of Count Adalbert of Ballenstedt, grandmother of Esico of Ballenstedt
• Alfrinus, monk of Corvey
