Odo III, Duke of Burgundy

Odo III. (French Eudes III, * 1166, † July 6, 1218 in Lyon) was Duke of Burgundy from 1192 to 1218 He was the son of the Duke Hugh III. . of Burgundy and Alix de Lorraine.

In the fight against King Philip II Augustus Odo defended for his father the castle of Châtillon -sur -Seine, but could not hold it and was captured in 1187. 1190 he took over the regency in Burgundy, after the father had gone to the Third Crusade. When he died in Tyre in 1192, Odo succeeded him as Duke. He supported the marriage of the king with Ingeborg of Denmark and was excommunicated for it. The German struggle for the throne took Odo to expand its influence in neighboring Reich.

Odo took part in 1209 in the Albigensian Crusade. As the highest-ranking nobleman he had it held the leadership of the army and successfully led the siege of Béziers (July 1209) and Carcassonne ( August 1209 ). After he finished his participation and left the running of Simon IV de Montfort.

In 1214 he fought in the Battle of Bouvines, where he led the right wing of the French army. In 1218 he set out to reinforce the army of the Fifth Crusade, which just Damietta in Egypt besieged, but died during preparations in Lyon.

He married in 1194 Matilda, Infanta of Portugal ( probably * 1157, † 1218 ), daughter of King Alfonso I and Matilda of Savoy, and widow of Philip of Alsace, which he did already in 1195 violated again.

1199 he then married Alix of Vergy (* 1182 † 1252 probably ), daughter of Hugo, Lord of Vergy, and the Gillette de Trainel. Their common children were:
