Oeschinen Lake

Underground drainage

The Oeschinensee lies above Kandersteg (Bernese Oberland) in Switzerland. Its water level is at an average altitude of 1'578 m. The lake is 56 m deep at normal water level and has an area of 1.5 km ², making it one of the larger lakes in the Alps Switzerland. It was created by the landslide an edge of the cone horn that blocked the water drain.

The eastern and south- Oeschinensee is framed by the three-thousand Blüemlisalp, Oeschinenhorn, Fründenhorn and doldenhorn, whose glacial streams, it is fed. The Öschibach (according to map of Switzerland with " E " instead of " Oe ") flows underground from the closure of the lake, but occurs soon after again to light. Its water is used for drinking water supply for Kandersteg and to generate electricity. The Öschibach opens in Kandersteg in the Kander.

On Oeschinensee along the hiking trails on the SAC huts Blüemlisalphut ( 2834 m) and Fründen Hut ( 2526 m).

From Kandersteg of the lake can be reached by cable car. From the mountain station ( here summer toboggan run) you reach the lake on gently sloping route in about 20 minutes walk. Some of commute vehicle teams between lift and Oeschinensee. Very rewarding is the hike from the summit station on the Heuberg (1940 m, spectacular views of the lake and the surrounding three thousand ) for farmed in the summer Alp Oberbärgli (1978 m), from where you can descend via the Alp Underbärgli to the restaurants on the lake can.

Vertigo and surefooted climbers can also circle the lake. The grass and rock bands of the so-called " Lower Schnuer » allow at about 1800 m height a very airy traverse from Alp Underbärgli the ascent to Fründen Hut. When wet or uncertain weather is discouraged strongly by a commission. Some of the sparse fuses are in a very bad condition ( but may be a via ferrata be helpful ). In " I de Fründe " said Kar in the wall angle multiple streams are to pass. A few cairns facilitate orientation. The Fründenschnuer allowed a very interesting transition from the Fründen - to Blüemlisalphut.

Since 2007, the Oeschinensee belongs to the extended UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau -Aletsch.
