Oettern

Oettern is a municipality in the southern part of the Weimar area and part of the joint management Mellingen.

Geography

The village lies in a meander of the River Ilm on the main road 87 between Bad Berka and Weimar. To the south rises the Kaitsch. Nearby Oetterns the valley of the Ilm has deeply eaten into the limestone and formed a scenic valley.

History

The place is first mentioned in 1376 in a document relating the Knight Rudolf of Kühnhausen for monastery Berka. Oettern had severely affected by ongoing floods. From the beginning of the 19th century the city was part of the Grand Duchy of Saxe -Weimar- Eisenach and after 1945 with the State of Thuringia part of the Soviet occupation zone and the GDR.

  • Rampart of Otter Castle It is situated on a mountain ridge to the right of Ilm. A well-preserved wall is west still preserved on the plateau, which limits the area. Findings point to the Neolithic and the late Hallstatt and early La Tène period.
