Oevenum

Oevenum (Danish: Øvenum, Frisian: Ööwenem ) is a municipality on the island of Foehr in the district of North Friesland Schleswig -Holstein.

History

1796 23 homes were destroyed by a fire in the neighboring Nieblum, so that in Oevenum a bell was installed on the roof of the school building, to warn the population in case of fire. The bell rang for breakfast and lunch and not only served from fires, but also during storm surges as an alarm signal.

1882 in Oevenum founded the first youth fire brigade in Germany. Thus the Oevenumer young firefighters is probably the oldest in Europe.

Oevenum is recognized resort since 1995.

Municipal council

Since the local elections of 2013, the voters Community Oevenumer voters Community ( ÖWG ) eight seats in the municipal council, holds a seat on a single candidate.

Mayoress

For the election period 2013-2018 Gisela Riemann ( ÖWG ) was re- elected mayor.

Economy

Tourism is an important source of income for the community.

Attractions

In the list of cultural monuments in Oevenum are registered in the list of monuments of Schleswig- Holstein cultural monuments.

In an old barn a local museum was set up which introduced the life and agriculture on Foehr. It was also found information about seafaring, for dike construction and the Wadden Sea. The museum has been closed since 2011.
