History

Women's football in the First Republic (1923-1938)

In the history of women's football Austria took originally a pioneering role. Already in 1923 called Ferdinand Swatosch, star forward of Austria Vienna, on the establishment of a women's team. In total, over 150 players signed up. A year later, in 1924, the first all-women football club in Austria was founded with the first Viennese Ladies Club "Diana". First peak reached the Austrian Women's football in the 1930s. In 1935, the Austrian Ladies Football Union was founded, which sought to host a separate championship for women. The first championship came in 1936 with nine clubs from the Vienna area for the staging, the home games of the clubs were visited an average of 3,000 spectators. However, this development was reluctant at that Austria's political leadership, which faced a sporting activity of women fundamentally opposed. The premature end of the Austrian women's football came in 1938 with the annexation by the German Reich.

Revival and the introduction of the Championship (1968-1982)

The suppression of women's sports in the era of National Socialism had after the war ended after a long time. It was not until the late 1960s there was a revival of women's football in Austria. As one of the first teams to founded in 1968 that of the USC Landhaus Vienna. Since the women's soccer sports still stuck after its revival in its infancy and there were no opponents for the Vienna in Austria, the club completed initially only friendly games against foreign teams, especially against strong teams from the former Czechoslovakia. The inclusion of the official match operation of the villa ladies took place on January 1, 1969, recording the first women's team in the Vienna Football Association in 1971.

Spurred on by the example of the USC country house, founded mainly in the Vienna area within a few years, numerous women's teams, which in already existing and known Mr. clubs held as treasury sections feeder. After a steady increase in women's teams of the Vienna Football Association since the 1930s, wrote in 1972 for the first time from an Austrian championship in women's soccer. The founding members of the former Women's League East were next to the USC country house of Favoritner AC, ESV Eastern Railway XI, SV Kagran, SVS Antonshof and Gersthoferstrasse Sports Association. As the first champion after reactivation of women's football in Austria, the Favoritner AC enlisted in the story. At the same time, a cup competition for women's clubs was introduced, which found its first winner in USC country house. Due to the ever-growing number of participants - 1979 clubs from Vienna, Lower Austria and Styria, Burgenland already participated in the Championship - a second power level was introduced in the same year. In 1980, in Linz with the Union Kleinmuenchen the first major all-female soccer team of Austria in the Second Republic.

Takeover by the OFB and the development to date (1982 -present)

In 1982, the Austrian Football Association custody of the Women's League and led them henceforth as the women's Bundesliga game with two levels. While the women's football sports in the east of Austria developed rapidly since the early 1970s and produced a variety of clubs, led to greater interest of the sport in Western Austria until the early 1990s steadily. The first known association, which led a women's section was the FC Wacker Innsbruck. However, the women's clubs from the West took the high travel costs for away games and because of the usually small club budgets do not participate in the national championship; Instead, they played until the mid- 1990s, only in their own country or the leagues of the national associations of Tyrol and Vorarlberg jointly controlled Western League. That at least could measure individual teams in Western Austria with those of the Bundesliga, Wacker Innsbruck and the Innsbruck AC proved by winning the Cup competitions in 1985 and 1994. Starting with the 1997/98 season, the Western Austrian teams played in the women's Bundesliga. First club from the West was the Innsbruck AC, and later SW Bregenz, which played along in Austria's highest league. In the 2000/2001 season was a hierarchy with the introduction of the 2nd Division Center, which was created from the merger of the state of Upper Austria and Salzburg leagues, born to organize bill. 2003, the second power stage with the second division south and west was extended. Then the last reform was carried out in summer 2011 and since the 2011/12 season, there is the second power level only in two separate leagues. The 2nd League East / South plays with the clubs from the provinces of Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Styria and Carinthia. The second league center / West includes the associations of the states of Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg. The 3rd level is then the women national league, which performs every member association itself. At the request of the participating clubs in the top performance level, it is called from the 2013/14 season again OFB Frauen Bundesliga!

OFB Frauen Bundesliga in the media

To date, the women's football in Austria has remained a marginal phenomenon in spite of his recovery, however. Only in a few media, there is a continuous coverage, only a few specific games in Vienna television station W. on TV about 24 aired briefly summarized. A further development is however to be noted here as well: as the championship finish and the cup final in recent years is also considered by the ORF with short messages or even short summaries. The first women's game which was broadcast live in Austria is the one from the Neulengbacher Wienerwald Stadium, Champions League, between Neulengbach and Potsdam on 10 November 2010, via Euro Sport | The ORF in spite of the new channel ORF SPORT until 31 January 2012 no woman play from Austria broadcast live. Only in the fall of 2012, the ORF has decided, but to transfer women's international matches live from Austria. This important European Championship qualifier against Denmark (September 15, 2012 in St. Pölten 3-1 ) and the play-off game for the finals in Sweden against Russia (21 October 2012 in St. Pölten 0-2 defeat ) likely have brought good ratings for the ORF. However, should the have been just mayflies, because the ORF has no money for more live broadcasts in the women's football! It is therefore an illusion to believe that in the future, at least internationals, cup finals and other important games ( eg from the Championship) will be broadcast live. What a pity!
