The Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (Trade Marks and Designs) (short OHIM or English. OHIM, Spanish OAMI ), based in Alicante ( Spain) is an agency of the European Union, which is responsible for registering Community trade marks and Community designs.

About the Office

The languages ​​of the Office are German, English, French, Italian and Spanish. It is nonprofit and is funded through the collection of fees. In 2007 the office with about 650 employees, total revenue generated in excess of 200 million euros and achieved a surplus of about 60 million euros.

History

The Office was established by Regulation (EC ) No 40 /94 on the Community trade mark. However, only with the Regulation (EC ) No 6/ 2002 on Community designs, it was actually more than one Trademark Office. In the discussions about the establishment of the Office, Spain prevailed, not, however, opted for Madrid - there were several international agreements already concluded on trademark law - but for Alicante as the seat of the Trademark Office.
