Office for National Statistics

The Office for National Statistics (ONS ) is an authority in the United Kingdom who is responsible for the collection and publication of statistics in the areas of economy, population and society at national and local levels. For historical reasons, was also appropriate to the General Register Office and is therefore also responsible for the recording of births, deaths and marriages in England and Wales.

The ONS was formed on 1 April 1996 by the merger of the Central Statistical Office (CSO ), the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys ( OPCS ) and the statistical departments of the ( unwound ) Department of Employment.

Seat of the ONS in Pimlico, London with other offices in the city of Newport, Titchfield in Hampshire and Southport.
