OFFSystem

The Owner - Free File System, or OFFSystem or OFF, is an open source file sharing program for storing and retrieving digital data in a P2P network.

The system ensures the Plausible deniability of a particular data exchange its users, which is sometimes desirable because in networks such as Gnutella and Gnutella2, FastTrack, Kazaa, eDonkey, users BitTorrent is now more common target of criminal prosecution and civil claims are.

Concept

All files in the OFF network are stored in randomly selected ( "randomized " ) data blocks. Each offered file before uploading to your own hard drive divided into several parts (blocks ) and then mixed with the other blocks files that have nothing to do with the actual file. This is done via an XOR operation and ensures that the blocks are defaced. At this point it is no longer possible to see which block belongs to which formerly included files.

Each participant in the OFF network are as required a certain amount of disk space on which then the individual mixed files are stored distributed in the form of blocks, but does not have the contents of the files as plain text, as it previously at the above XOR linking with other randomly selected blocks were mixed. It thus does not save the files of others or the stored original file on its node, but only disjointed blocks. This makes anonymity.

To download a file, you need a key, which is awarded in the form of a URL. The client then loads itself distributed blocks from the basket storage (English: "Bucket " ) of the selected nodes and puts them back together to form a complete file. Because the small parts are ambiguous and arise as a combination of several files or small parts, we can draw no conclusions from the existing stored data to the original files.

The only element that allows the assignment, is the URL of the uploaded files. However, these are by providing the keys on the search entirely optional ( "protected" ). It just need to be replaced as through other channels eg Retroshare anonymous only the URLs.

The Owner Free File System pursues the same objective as the Freenet Project, however, is easier to operate with optimized speed and therefore as soon as BitTorrent or eMule.

It seems that the OFFSystem is no longer being developed at present. The last release is dated January 28, 2010. Too are meanwhile all "start nodes " offline, and thus the client does not find more other nodes (see Bugtrack )!
