Ofusato

Ofusato (Japanese承 察 度, Shōsatto, or Ufusato, † 1398 in Korea) was the founder and first king of the Kingdom of Nanzan on Okinawa.

Beginning of the 14th century there were on Okinawa no central political authority, but only a number of local chieftains, loosely subordinate to a supreme prince. One of these chiefs was Ofusato who as supreme prince renounced after taking office Tamagusukus with some followers from this. From his center of power, the castle from Ozato, he extended his influence over a portion of the southern Okinawa and finally called in 1337 the Kingdom of Nanzan. Already in 1322 the Kingdom Hokuzan had broken away from the Empire Chūzan under Tamagusuku in the north. According to historical sources Ofusatos reign from 1337 until his death in 1398 at, but this seems unlikely due to the long duration. Little is known about the reign Ofusatos, except that he did present itself in 1388 to the Chinese emperor as ruler and was included in the tribute system. He died in 1398 during a stay in Korea. His brother Yafuso then ascended the throne and asked the Chinese rulers for recognition of his rule.
