Ogcocephalidae

Ogcocephalus parvus

The Seefledermäuse ( Ogcocephalidae ) are ground-dwelling fish from the order of Armflosser ( Lophiiformes ).

Dissemination

Seefledermäuse worldwide are living with the exception of the Mediterranean, subtropical and tropical seas, on the ground, usually at greater depths of 100 meters. Only the native to the Caribbean, the West Atlantic and around the Galapagos Islands genus Ogcocephalus preferred shallower water.

Features

The often colorful, red and orange colored fish have a strange flattened, triangular, some with spiny bony plates protected body. From the dorsal fin only the first beam is still there, which is transformed to that for the order of Armflosser ( Lophiiformes ) typical Angel. In some species, it also sits on a horn -like extension on the front of the head (hence the name of Ogcocephalus ( altgr. ) ogkos ( Latinized oncus, " tumor " ) and kephale " head ").
