Ogea Levu

Ogea [ Oney ], also referred Ongea, [Note 1] is an atoll in the south east of the Lau archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. Politically, it is part of the Eastern Division of the island nation Fiji.

Geography

Ogea is about 10 km east of Fulaga, 50 km south-east of Namuka -i - Lau and about 100 km north-northwest of the isolated island located Vatoa. Ogea consists of numerous small islands and two large islands smallest: the larger Ogea Levu (also Ongea Levu, dt " Great Ogea " ) in the center of the atoll with a height of 83 m and the uninhabited Ogea Driki (also Ongea Ndriki, dt " Small Ogea " ) in the south with a height of 93 meters above the sea. The total land area is 13.3 km ². The islands are almost completely surrounded by a fringing reef, only in the southwest makes the 228 m wide and 24 m deep Barracouta passage one entry into the lagoon. Ogea is inhabited; the largest, of the same village is situated on a bay in the south of Ogea Levu. Only about one kilometer northeast of Ogea is the for shipping dangerous, nearly round reef Thakau Tetika.

Management

Ogea belongs to the province of the Lau Islands in the Eastern Division, and forms a village ( koro ) in the historic district ( tikina ) Vulaga whose main part constitutes the seven kilometers further west Atoll Fulaga with the other villages Muanaira, Muanaicake and Naividamu.

Fauna

Ogea is home to the endemic and with only about 2000 individuals at risk in its portfolio rust breast Monarchs ( Mayrornis versicolor). More abundant land bird species are amongst others, the marsh harrier ( Circus approximans ) and the barn owl (Tyto alba).
