Ogens

Ogens is a municipality in the district of Gros- de -Vaud in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Ogens is located on 629 m above sea level. Level, 22 km north of the canton capital Lausanne ( straight line ). The small village extends on a plateau east of the Taleinschnitts Mentue, in the northern Vaud Mittelland.

The area of ​​3.4 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Molassehügellandes between the Mentue and the middle Broyetal. The western boundary runs along the deeply incised into the molasse Mentue. To the east of the municipality of soil over the high plateau of Ogens extends up to the height west of Thierrens, on 740 m above sea level. M. the highest point of the municipality is reached. By the northeastern and northern part of the municipality of Bach Augine flows in a little sunken in the plateau narrow Talniederung. The right-hand tributary of the Mentue forms in parts the border with the neighboring communities. From the municipality surface 1997 6 % came from settlements, 30 % of forest and woody plants and 64% agriculture.

To Ogens include several individual farms. The neighboring communities of Ogens are in the north Bioley- Magnoux, the east and south Montanaire, southwest and northwest Bercher Oppens.

Population

With 272 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Ogens one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the 96.5 % inhabitants are French-speaking and German-speaking 3.1 % (as of 2000). The population of Ogens amounted in 1900 to 357 inhabitants. Thereafter, until 1980, by strong emigration recorded a decrease by 50% to 180 inhabitants; Since then, the population increased but again slightly.

Economy

Ogens was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding have an important role in the economic structure of the population. Some other jobs are in the local retail industry and the services available. At the Augine formerly was a mill. With the construction of single family homes in the past few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The community is located off the major thoroughfares on a road from Bercher after Thierrens. By Postbus course, which runs from Bercher after Thierrens, Ogens is connected to the public transport network.

History

The first documentary mention of the place was already in 1166 under the present name. Later published nor spellings Ogeins and Oiens ( 1227 ) and Ogiens ( 1412 ). The name goes back to the Burgundian personal names Augo and means for the people of Augo. Has the same origin, the name of the village Bach Augine.

Ogens belonged in the Middle Ages to the possession of the counts of Gruyères. This gave the village in 1227 the cathedral chapter of Lausanne. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536 Ogens came under the administration of the bailiwick Moudon. After the collapse of the ancien régime, the village belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the District Moudon.

Attractions

Dating back to the 18th century church of Ogens at the northern exit of the village was in 1903 replaced by a new building. In the center some characteristic farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved.
