Ogg#History

Ogg Media is a container format for videos. It is a hack of the Ogg container, the Xiph.Org Foundation. Ogg Media files have the file extension ' ogm '. In addition to video data they like DVDs can contain several audio tracks in different languages and subtitle tracks, and chapter outlines. The format was originally developed by its inventor Tobias Waldvogel to allow the streaming of video and audio data, which is very poorly implemented with AVI. Also, it was possible to make Ogg Vorbis audio for videos available. That was with the AVI container for lack of a ACM wrapper for Ogg Vorbis was not yet possible.

Relationship with Ogg

The problem with OGM is that the DirectShow filters developed by Waldvogel (see below) are an extension of that break with the Ogg specification. For this reason, it should not be called " Ogg ", as this brand also requires compliance with the specification.

Playback of OGM files

Windows

In addition to the appropriate decoders for the contained data tracks ( usually Xvid or DivX video and Vorbis audio ), a OggMedia DirectShow splitter is required, which can read the container format and make it available to the decoders the streams contained therein, eg:

  • Developed by Tobias Waldvogel original splitter to version 0.9.9.5. The installer can still be downloaded eg from Doom9.org, but is now obsolete.
  • Haali Media Splitter, which supports except OGM and Matroska, MP4 and AVI.
  • RadLight Ogg Media with support for the Theora video codec.
  • Illiminable 's DirectShow Filters

Furthermore, a player is required that uses the DirectShow framework, such as:

  • Windows Media Player
  • Media Player Classic
  • Zoom Player
  • BSPlayer

Alternatively, a player can be used which does not rely on DirectShow, but his own support for OGM brings, such as VLC media player or MPlayer.

Mac OS and Linux

In Mac OS or Linux following players OGM support directly:

  • VLC media player
  • Xine
  • MPlayer
  • Helix Player
  • Kaffeine

Tools

Unix users can play OGM files with MPlayer, or edit using of ogmtools:

  • Ogminfo - displays stream information
  • Ogmdemux - demultiplexes an ogm stream into its component media
  • Ogmsplit - divides a ogm stream into its chunks
  • Ogmmerge - combined media components into an ogm stream
  • Dvdxchap - extracts chapter information from a DVD
