Oglethorpe County, Georgia
The Oglethorpe County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lexington.
Geography
The County is located in north-central Georgia, in the southeast about 30 km off the western border of South Carolina and has an area of 1145 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers of water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Elbert County, Wilkes County, Taliaferro County, Greene County, Oconee County, Clarke County and Madison County.
History
Oglethorpe County was formed on December 19, 1793 19 County in Georgia. It was named after the founder of Georgia, General James E. Oglethorpe.

According to the census of 2000, there were 12,635 people in Oglethorpe County. Of these, 116 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 4,849 households and 3,539 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 78.29 percent White, 19.75 percent Black or African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.63 percent from other races groups; 0.85 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.38 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,849 households out of which 33.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.3 percent were married couples living together, 11.5 percent were single mothers and 27.0 percent were non-families. 23.0 percent of all households and 9.0 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.05.
25.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.8 percent between 18 to 24, 30.0 percent between 25 and 44, 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.4 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.3 males.
The median income for a household in the 35 578 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family $ 41,443. Males had a median income of $ 30,733, women $ 22,289. The per capita income was $ 17,089. 10.0 percent of families and 13.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
