Ohbijou

Ohbijou is an indie pop band from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Band History

Ohbijou began as a solo project of singer-songwriter Casey Mecija (* 1981) from Brantford, who also worked as a production assistant at MuchMusic. During the writing and composing their songs Casey stated that they have the musical support of her younger sister Jennifer Mecija (* 1985) required, with which they played their early gigs together. The Mecija sisters later moved to Toronto at Ryerson University and the Ontario College of Art & Design to visit.

In Toronto, the band by Heather Kirby, James Bunton, Anissa Hart, Ryan Carley and Andrew Kinoshita advanced. Casey is lead singer, but also plays guitar, piano and ukulele. Her sister Jennifer accompanied the band as a second voice, Ohbijou adds instrumental but also violin, glockenspiel, organ and melodica.

Ohbijou draw their influences from the genres of pop, folk and bluegrass, Casey is an inspiration to the Canadian songwriter Julie Doiron. Ohbijous music is usually referred to as indie pop and has similarities to Bic Runga and Mazzy Star on.

Since the release of their debut album Swift Feet for Troubling Times (2006), the band played at several festivals in Canada, for example, on the Osheaga Festival in Montreal, the Hillside Festival in Guelph and the opening of the Virgin Festival in Toronto.

Ohbijou have been nominated along with Ill Scarlett, Final Fantasy and Emily Haines ( Metric ) for the 2007 Galaxie Rising Stars Award of the CBC. The band organized the shots published in 2007 Compilation Friends in Bellwoods, a charity project for Toronto's Daily Bread Food Bank, and also contributed a remix of their song The Other Side at.

The follow-up album Beacons was released in June 2009.
