Ohio County (Indiana)

Ohio County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Rising Sun.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme southeast of Indianapolis, on the east by Kentucky and has an area of 227 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Dearborn County, Boone County (Kentucky), Switzerland County and Ripley County.

History

Ohio County was formed on January 4, 1844 from parts of Dearborn County. It was named after the Ohio River.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Ohio County 5623 people in 2201 households and 1586 families. The population density was 25 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.70 percent White, 0.48 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.05 percent from other races groups; 0.48 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.44 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2201 households out of which 31.9 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 59.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.5 percent were single mothers and 27.9 percent were non-families. 23.2 percent of all households and 10.2 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.00.

24.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.8 percent between 18 to 24, 28.6 percent between 25 and 44 years. 25.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 97 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 96.2 males.

The median income for a household in the 41 348 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family $ 48,801. Males had a median income of $ 37,297, women $ 25,242. The per capita income was $ 19,627. 5.8 percent of families and 7.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
