Ohio County (West Virginia)

The Ohio County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. In the census in 2010, the County had 44 443 inhabitants and a population density of 161.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Wheeling.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme north of West Virginia in the Northern Panhandle, is bordered to the east by Pennsylvania and on the west by Ohio, where the limit by the Ohio River is formed. It has an area of 282 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers of water surface. At the Ohio County borders the following counties:

History

The Ohio County was formed on October 7, 1776 from parts of the district of West Augusta. It was named after the Ohio River.

The first county seat was from 1777 to 1797 in West Liberty, which still bore the name of Black 's Cabin at the time. 1797, the administration was moved to Wheeling, where it is located today.

1861 took place in Wheeling called the Wheeling Convention, a series of meetings of representatives of the counties, who rejected the waste of Virginia from the United States. This was the birth of the then newly formed state of West Virginia.
