OhmyNews

OhmyNews is the grassroots journalism attributable Internet newspaper in South Korea, founded on 22 February 2000 by Oh Yeon -ho. The name comes from " Oh my God ". 2004, the English OhmyNews International ( OMNI ) was launched, which contained only posts by citizen reporters. This international edition has been discontinued and transformed into a blog about citizen journalism because of the wealth and breadth of contributions received in August 2010.

Organization

In the Korean edition deliver 41,000 registered OhmyNews citizen reporter posts. The editors reviewed and published around two-thirds of an average of 200 per day. The approximately 60 professionals who started mostly as an amateur reporter, even submit only about 20 percent of the content of the website with over two million impressions every day. The payment is based on the system to reward good contributions voluntarily. OhmyNews is funded by ads. Every Saturday prints OhmyNews the best articles as a newspaper.

Reception

Founder Oh Yeon -ho looks thanks to the " marriage of technology and democracy," a "digital democracy ": First citizen journalism, the real fourth estate, finish with a time of " from above ". OhmyNews am one of the leading voices in the country. It had the distance to Washington, D.C. decisively shaped, uncovered scandals about secret payments to North Korea. Other South Korean media, some of which were closely linked to those in power, corruption could not ignore it any longer and had to open other topics. OhmyNews coined the election of Roh Moo -hyun to the South Korean president in 2002 ("the first Internet - president of the World "). Then gave his first interview OhmyNews.

Trends

On 22 February 2006 signed OhmyNews and the Japanese company Softbank an investment agreement over U.S. $ 11 million. End of August 2006 launched a Japanese edition, a Chinese is planned.

With OhmyNews Japan expanded for the first time a Korean mass media in Japan. It started with a well-known journalists of and 22 employees, including 10 solid reporter. In July 2009, Oh Yeon -ho pointed to significant losses of OhmyNews. The reason he mentioned the crisis and display the run-down of government subsidies.
