Ohnišťany

Ohnišťany ( German Wochnischtian, also living Istan ) is a municipality in the Czech Republic. It is located ten kilometers north of Nový Bydžov and belongs to Okres Hradec Králové.

Geography

Ohnišťany is on the left side of the creek Ohnišťanský creek on the East Bohemian panel. To the east rises the Hořeník (271 m) and in the northwest the Horka (278 m). In the east, the railway line Velky Osek - Trutnov runs.

Neighboring towns are Obora in the north, Tereziny Dary in the northeast, Lískovice, Sukorady and Kouty in the east, Šaplava the southeast, Podlesí, Paske and Loučná Hora in the south, Chotělice the southwest, Vysoke Veseli and Stare Smrkovice in the west and Nevratice and Chomutice in the northwest.

History

The first mention of Ohnišťany place in the year 1318. Later north of the old village with the church was another settlement.

After the abolition of patrimonial regimes emerged in 1850, the two communities Staré and Nové Ohnišťany Ohnišťany in the district of Nový Bydžov. 1921 both villages were united to the community Ohnišťany. Since 1961 Ohnišťany belongs to Okres Hradec Králové.

Attractions

  • Church of St. Wenceslas; the 15th-century building received its present shape after the fire of 1804.
  • Neo-Gothic castle Podlesí with an English park, built in 1877-1883 in place of a sheep farm, southwest of the village
