Okoč

Okoč ( until 1948 slovak " Ekeč "; Hungarian Ekecs ) is a city and a municipality in Okres Dunajská Streda of Trnavský kraj in southwestern Slovakia.

Geography

The municipality is located on the lower part of the Great Rye Island, a river island between the Danube and the Little Danube, which is part of the Slovak Danube lowland. To the north and north-east of the town of Komárňanský runs kanál. Okoč lies on the national road 561 and is five kilometers from Velky Meder and 33 kilometers from Komárno. The rail connection is made via a stop on the railway line Bratislava - Komárno.

Administratively divided the community into the parts Okoč, Janosikovo na Ostrove and Opatovský Sokolec ( incorporated in 1976, Hungarian Apácaszakállas ). Further facilities in the surrounding areas, some small farms as ASOD Dropie, Golas, Velky sec and Viharos.

History

The community part Opatovský Sokolec is mentioned for the first time in 1221, while the capital is only detectable as Ekech 1268. Both places were in Komárom county of the Kingdom of Hungary and the latter place belonged to the manor of the Castle of Komárom. In both places the inhabitants were mostly active in animal husbandry and fishery in particular, which is also shown on the coat of arms.

After the collapse of Austria - Hungary both places came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia. 1938-45 they were due to the First Vienna Award again in Hungary. In 1976 came the merger of both places.
