ÅŒkuma, Fukushima

Okuma (Japanese大熊 町, machi ) is a ghost town in Japan in the district of Futaba in Fukushima Prefecture.

Geography

Okuma is located on the Pacific coast. The settlement focused mainly along the river Kuma- gawa (熊 川), it removes the village center Ōno about less than 5 km from the coast and the village of Kumamachi near the estuary.

Along the northern part of the coast there are industrial companies, the site of the nuclear power plant Fukushima Daiichi dominates this with an area of ​​more than 1.5 km ².

The western half of the municipality is part of the Abukuma Highlands (阿 武 隈 高地, Abukuma Kochi) and was due to its mountainous character, sparsely populated and characterized by forests.

Is surrounded by Okuma Futaba in the northeast, Namie in the northwest, Tamura in the West, Kawauchi in the southwest and Tomioka in the southeast.

History

The municipality was established on November 1, 1954 from the merger of the two villages Ōno (大 野村, -mura ) and Kumamachi (熊 町 村, -mura ). From the two place names also of those of the new community was formed.

The city was taken on 11 March 2011 by the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami triggered it. Until May 20, 37 dead and 7 missing were counted. By which triggered Fukushima nuclear disaster had in the course of which the city will be completely evacuated and a transfer of population and urban functions according to Aizu Wakamatsu - west of the prefecture was addressed.

Traffic

Major highways in the municipality are the National Road 6 by Chūō in Tokyo and Sendai, and the National Road 288 to Kōriyama or Futaba.

Connection to the railway network consists of the JR Joban Line to the Ueno Station in Tokyo or Toride. The only station of the municipality is Ōno.

Education

In the city there are primary schools Ōno and Kumamachi, the middle school Okuma and Futaba- Shoyo - prefectural high school (双 叶翔阳 高等学校).

Due to the evacuation in March 2011 after Aizu Wakamatsu - an elementary and middle school for the children of Okuma is there to be opened in April 2011.
