Okurigana

Okurigana (Japanese送り仮名, about afterwards clever characters) in Japanese Hiragana script, which together form a kanji word. The most common Okurigana be used as grammatical morphemes in the conjugation of verbs, while the kanji represent the lexical morpheme.

Example:帰り たく ない

In the example with the pronunciation kaeritakunai (Eng. I do not want to return home ) is the first character (帰kae ) a kanji meaning to return ( home ). All other characters are Okurigana; they modify the verb as follows:

  • Return inflectional ending of the verb for ( home ) :りri
  • たくtaku: like tai = / want
  • ないnai: Negation
