Okutataragi Pumped Storage Power Station

The Okutataragi pumped storage power plant is a large pumped storage power plant in Asago in Japanese Hyōgo Prefecture. With an installed capacity of 1932 megawatts, it is one of the largest pumped-storage power plants in the world and the second largest in Japan. The plant is operated by the Kansai Denryoku.

As with most pumped storage power plant uses two reservoirs located at different heights, leaves from water and pumps it up as electricity demand rises and falls. The construction began in 1970 and was completed in 1974.

Kurokawa reservoir

The Kurokawa reservoir, the upper basin, has a capacity of 33.387 million cubic meters, a catchment area of 1.09 km ², a water surface of 5.2 km ² and is dammed by Kurokawa Dam.

Tataragi reservoir

The Tataragi reservoir, the lower reservoir has a capacity of 19.44 million cubic meters, a catchment area of 1.05 km ², a water surface of 13.4 km ² and is dammed by Tataragi Dam.
