Ólafur Rafnsson

Ólafur Edvard Rafnsson ( born April 7, 1963; † June 19, 2013 in Geneva) was an Icelandic sports official and basketball player. He was most recently president of the Continental Basketball Association FIBA Europe and Chairman of the National Olympic Committee of his home country.

Ólafur Edvard Rafnsson won in 1988 as a basketball player with the Icelandic club Haukar Hafnarfjörður the first and only time of his death national championship. He also ran seven times on the Icelandic national team. After completing his studies at the University of Iceland in 1990 he became a lawyer and from 1996 to 2006 Chairman of the National Basketball Association in Iceland. In 2006 he was elected to the 25-member Council of the continental Basketball Federation FIBA Europe. He also became Chairman of the National Olympic Committee of Iceland. In 2010 he was elected for a four year term as President of the European continental federation FIBA Europe. Ólafur Edvard Rafnsson died unexpectedly at the age of 50 years during a stay in Geneva on the occasion of the opening of the new headquarters of the World Federation FIBA. He left behind his wife and three children Gerður.
