Olang

Olang ( Olang Italian, dialect Oaling ) is a municipality with 3110 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) near Brunico, South Tyrol East (Italy). The center lies at an elevation of around 1080 m.

Geography

The Olang is located in the east- west trending Pusteria. Their main settlement areas are in Olang pool, a valley widening east of Brunico. South of it rises the total of 48.95 km ² large municipality to the mountains of the Dolomites Lago di.

In the midst of meadows and fields of the valley floor are in close proximity - from northwest to southeast - the three fractions Niederolang (980-1040 m asl ), Mittelolang (1040-1060 m) and Oberolang (1050-1100 m). The north flowing past Rienz in parts forms the municipal boundary to Anterselva. East of the three villages located - in some cases belonging to the neighboring town of Wels -Tesido - the Olang reservoir ( 1055 m).

To the southwest the terrain rises to the Kronplatz ( 2275 m ), on the Olang facing slopes of the small village of fraction Geiselsberg ( 1340-1410 m) and other hamlets and farms are scattered. South of the basin Olanger the terrain rises to the Kronplatz by the Furkelpass (1789 m) separate mountain chain. History

Between 985 and 993 Olang was first mentioned as Olaga in the tradition of the Bishopric of Brixen documented book. According to linguist Egon Kühebacher is the name of Celtic origin and means " possession of an aulos ". Between 1142 and 1155 witnessed the names form Olagen in the book tradition of the Augustinian congregation Neustift near Brixen. 1460 the " Pointed Stöckl " was built as Pestmahnmal commemorating the plague of 1448 in the Olanger hallways.

1809 there was a popular uprising against the French and Bavarians, the Protect Lieutenant Peter Sigmayr was executed on January 14, 1810 as a rebel. The Pustertalerstrasse railroad was built in 1871 as a network component of the Austrian Southern Railway Company, which had a positive impact on the incipient tourism. Around 1900 Olang an economic boom, first tourist successes were due to the spas Bergfall and Schartl as well as some restaurant owners. Attractions

The Marienkirche Oberolang dates from the 15th century, its present appearance is (most recently in 1900 ) due to conversions. The Giles Church Mittelolang was built in 1138. Olang is internationally known as a toboggan stronghold. The Sports Club Olang was founded in 1952. A great event for the S. C.
