Olavi Salonen

Olavi Vihtori Kalervo Salonen ( born December 20 1933 Noormarkku ) is a former Finnish middle distance runner, who was for a day world record holder over 1500 meters in 1957.

Career

Salonen parade routes were the 800 and 1500 meters. Between 1958 and 1965 he won twelve Finnish championship titles over these distances. His biggest success was Salonen celebrate in 1957. On July 11, 1957 Salonen went to Turku on a 1500 - meter race at the start. Salonen won the same time as his compatriot Olavi Salsola in the new world record time of 3:40,2 min. Also, the third of the barrel, which also originated from Finland Olavi Vuorisalo, remained under the old world record time of 3:40,6 min, prepared by the Hungarian István Rózsavölgyi in August 1956. Salonen and Salsola lost her world record but just one day later on Stanislav Jungwirth, the 1500 meters in 3:38,1 min was run at a run in his native Czechoslovakia (see also 1500 - meter world record run of Turku 1957).

The European Athletics Championships 1962 in Belgrade Salonen came to fourth place in the 800 -meter run, where he arrived the same time as the Second Valeri Bulischew from the USSR and the Third Paul Schmidt from Germany to the finish. The victory went to the German Manfred Matuschewski. 1963 Salonen won the Nordic Cup over 1500 meters. With 31 years he was the last time Finnish champion in the 1500 meters. In 2009 he was awarded the Pro Urheilu price. At the Olympic Games in 1960 and 1964, Salonen took no part in the final minute.

During his career, Salonen was a member of the clubs Noormarkun Nopsa, Rose Lewin Urheilijat -38 in Pori, Kaipolan Vire and Valkeakosken Haka.
