Olbia, Ukraine

Olbia was an ancient city. Their remains lie in Parutino in the Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine.

Olbia is valid at the mouth of the Bug on the edge of ancient Dacia as one of the Ionian city -ups on the Black Sea. The Greek colony was founded by Miletus in 633 BC. Here Greeks, Scythians and Sarmatians are said to have lived.

History

Herodotus mentions a caravan route from Olbia to Inner Asia. Also one of the amber routes, the route of the Greeks, led by the Sambia up to Mycenae, touched Olbia and is likely to have contributed significantly to the process described by Herodotus of this city.

According to Herodotus, the Scythians called the north and west of the Black Sea Olbioniten.

In the fourth century BC, the cities of Olbia and Miletus were working together against the forces of the army commanded by General Zopyrion Alexander the Great to defend. Towards the end of the third century BC, began an economic decline of the city, which finally surrendered to King Skilurus of Scythia. The town flourished under Mithridates Eupator on again. Under the rule of the Getae the time of King Burebista but eventually came to an abrupt end to this ancient city.

Under the rule of Rome Olbia parts were rebuilt. Dion of Prusa visited the city, which he called after there opening into the Black Sea River as Borystenic Disvourse. The Roman province of Moesia belonging city was probably abandoned in the fourth century of our era, after it was burned down twice in the course of the so-called Gothic wars.

Excavations

The area in which the remains of the ancient city of Olbia lie, was until 1902 owned by the Count Musin - Pushkin, who did not give permission for archaeological excavations. Boris Farmakovsky led in due time by ( 1901-1915 and 1924-1926 ) professional excavations, in which, among other numerous inscriptions and sculptures were found. Also remarkable are the bronze coins in the shape of a dolphin. Since the archaeological site is gradually eroded by the Black Sea, the days of the archaeological excavations at this location are counted.
