Old Academy (Munich)

The Old Academy, also called Wilhelminum, is a large building in Munich from the 16th century with a Renaissance facade. It was originally home to the Munich Jesuit College. The part six storey building with four courtyards is located in the old town.

History

Originally a Jesuit grammar school was built by Duke Albrecht V of the Dutch architect Friedrich Sustris, composed of Augsburgers Wendl Dietrich and Wolfgang Mueller by Munich here in the years 1574 to 1576.

1583-1590 built by the Jesuits, with the support of Duke Wilhelm V, called the Pious, St. Michael's Church and a college building, the Wilhelminum. The architect was probably Friedrich Sustris ( 1540-1599 ). After the ban in 1773, the Bavarian Cadet Corps moved into the building.

After the dissolution of the Jesuit order, the building housed the police department (1773 ), the Bavarian State Library (1774 ) and the Order of Malta (1781 ). As of 1783, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences was then placed in Wilhelminum, and from 1807 onwards, the Academy of Fine Arts with an Electoral painter, sculptor and art school. In 1826, the Ludwig- Maximilians- University was moved from Landshut to Munich and stayed until 1840 housed in the building of the Academy. The Wilhelminum fell in April 1944 the bombs to the victim. The building was built by Josef Wiedemann again housed the Academy in the northeast wing of the Munich Residenz.

Use

Last were in Wilhelminum the State Office for Statistics and Data Processing, the Landesbodenkreditanstalt and the ( staff and office space greatly reduced ) Jesuit College with accommodation, which currently reside ten Fathers. 2006 moved from the Landesbodenkreditanstalt after the Catholic Church bought the rear ( northern ) part of the building complex. In May 2012, the Bavarian State Office completed its move into St. -Martin-Straße for Statistics and Data Processing.

The building will be used as follows:

  • Maxburgstraße 1: Jesuit is a tower stump in St. Michael, in this component.
  • Neuhauser Straße 6: Church building of St. Michael (Michael Church ) - on the pedestrian street ( north )
  • Neuhauser Straße 8: until May 2012 Bavarian State Office for Statistics and Data Processing, vacant since then - on the pedestrian street ( north )
  • Neuhauser Straße 10: Department store Hettlage

By the end of March 2012, the department store Hettlage left the building complex to the end of May 2012 also saw the move to the State Office for Statistics and Data Processing in the Obergiesing district. No plans have been announced for future use of the front building complex in the pedestrian zone next to St. Michael's Church still.

On 17 December 2013, the property comprising of approximately 6,055 m² has been awarded to 65 years leasehold to the Signa Holding.

Directly in front of the building at Neuhauser Strasse is the Richard Strauss Fountain.

Others

There are the following courtyards: Zierhof, cloister, Schmuckhof and the farmyard of the State Office.

Owned by the State of Bavaria, managed the building by the Bavarian State Ministry of Finance. Since the spring of 2007, a sale was in conversation, that the Free State would sell the building with the exception of the remaining colleges to an institutional investor. In July 2012, then you have begun to tender for the award of the ground lease. As an external service to the project site presentation IBB München GmbH ( www.ibbmuenchen.de ) was commissioned.
