Old City Hall (Toronto)

The old city hall of Toronto ( engl. Old City Hall) was from 1899 to 1966 seat of their city government. The Town Hall in the Canadian city of Toronto is located in downtown on the corner of Queen Street and Bay Street, across from the new City Hall. The building in the Romanesque Revival style has a 104 -meter high clock tower and was designed by EJ Lennox designed in 1889. Lennox immortalized his signature on the scrollwork of the first floor. At its opening on September 18, 1899 it was the largest building in the city, and the largest administrative building in North America. Previously served a building at St. Lawrence Market of the city as a city hall.

1965 moved to the city council in the new City Hall. According to initial plans, the building of the old town hall should be torn down and give way to a series of skyscrapers. Only the clock tower should be allowed to stand. The public, however prevented this project. Currently the building is used by the provincial government of Ontario as a court.
