Old Field is a village on the north shore of Long Iceland in the U.S. state of New York. It has the status of an incorporated village within the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County. According to the Census of 2000, the village had 947 inhabitants.

Geography

Old Field has an area of 5.7 km ², 5.3 km ² land and 0.4 km ² water surface. It occupies the area of ​​a peninsula in Long Iceland Sound. It borders south to Stony Brook and Setauket - East Setauket to southeast. To the north is a lagoon called Flax Pond, which is an important natural area. History

The place name (English for Old frame ) refers to an agricultural use of Indians and fallow arrival of Europeans area. Of these, the place was later populated than the areas further inland lying and initially used only as pasture. The first known building dates from 1725. A first lighthouse was built in 1823. It has long been dominated by agriculture and fishing, until it became a residential and resort for the rich since the beginning of the 20th century.
