Old State Capitol State Historic Site (Illinois)

The Old State Capitol State Historic Site in Springfield ( Illinois) is now serving as a museum fifth State Capitol of the State of Illinois.

It was originally built in 1837-40 and served as the Parliament of the State of Illinois from 1840 to 1876. Abraham Lincoln announced his presidential candidacy in 1858, Barack Obama 's in 2007.

Abraham Lincoln was also 1840-41 worked as a deputy and pleaded here as a lawyer 1841-60. 1876-1966 served the classical building as a local courthouse of Sangamon County. Because of the close relationship to Abraham Lincoln the meanwhile heavily modified building was moved to the end of the 1960s as a museum in the approximate state of the mid-19th century. De facto, these were a demolition and rebuilding as reconstruction to patriotic museum purposes.

On July 4, 1961, the Old State Capitol was recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
