Oldambt (municipality)

Oldambt is a municipality in the eastern part of the Dutch province of Groningen. It was created on 1 January 2010 by the merger of the former municipalities Reider country Scheemda and Winschoten. It has 38,750 inhabitants ( 1 January 2013). The inhabitants have chosen the name, which stems from the same land itself.

Community structure

The municipality consists of the following districts:

  • Blauwe Stad ( population in 2007 )
  • Reider country with Bad Nieuweschans, Beerta, Drieborg, Finsterwolde and Nieuw- Beerta
  • Scheemda with Heiligerlee, Midwolda, Nieuw Scheemda, Nieuwolda, Oostwold and Westerlee
  • Winschoten

Neighboring communities, Oldambt as a border community

Neighboring municipalities in the province of Groningen are, beginning from the south, clockwise: Bellingwedde, Pekela, Menterwolde, Slochteren and Delfzijl. In the Northeast follows the Dollard, and in the east the neighboring community league in Lower Saxony. Oldambt opposite Emden at the Dollard.

Policy

Found on 18 November 2009 because of the church plant held early elections. The council consists of 25 members, spread over nine parties and groups. With a turnout of 42.3 %, the PvdA with 7, the CDA and the VVD with 4 and SP were with 3 seats, the most successful.

Pronunciation of the borough's name

The church was the first in the Netherlands a name in common in the province of Groningen dialect. Oldambt means dutch oud Ambt, German " Old Office ".
