Oldambt (region)

The Oldambt is an area in the Dutch province of Groningen. It lies between the outer Ommelanden, Westerwolde and the Rheiderland. It presently consists of three areas together, the clothes Oldambt, the Wold - Oldambt and the Dutch part of the Rheiderland, the " Reider Country " is written there. The Oldambt includes the church today Oldambt. Originally included the southern part of Menterwolde and parts of the municipalities Veendam and Pekela to Oldambt, but at present it is one of those more likely to be Groninger Fehnkolonien.

History

The historic Oldambt (still without the rheiderländer areas) was one of the Ommelanden in eastern lauwerschen Friesland. The "old office" was at first only in the lower reaches of the Ems, but colonization by southern marsh areas were opened up. The Oldambt came early under Frankish rule and shared back then in the Wold Oldambt (South Oldambt ) and the clothes Oldambt ( North Oldambt ). It later became the fourth member of Ommelander Union of Groningen. Capital was then Midwolda, the local church was used for council meetings.

On May 23, 1568, it came in Oldambt at the monastery of Heiligerlee during the Eighty Years' War a battle between the Spaniards and the Dutch freedom fighters. These were won by the Dutch though, but fell Count Adolf of Nassau ( see Battle of Heiligerlee ).

In the 19th century a large gap between rich and poor developed. This has meant that has remained particularly Reiderland a stronghold of the Dutch Communists.

Language

Vernacular in Oldambt is usually the Groninger Platt ( Gronings ), a Lower Saxon dialect ( Nedersaksisch ) with Frisian influences, similar to the East Frisian Low German. It is said that the Oldambt is the area in Groningen, where even most talked Nedersaksisch. However, school language is Dutch.

Infrastructure

The Oldambt is well connected by highway and railway lines on both sides of the German -Dutch border. Particular attention is currently focused on the project De Blauwestad, a major construction project on an artificial body of water.
