Designation

In the Tivoli Gardens neighborhood of Kingston / Jamaica, called by the locals Jungle, the Junglists the dominant transition and Kingston- far were (also called TGs ) feared. In the live recordings of sound system tapes from Jamaica in the 1980s, one can hear the DJs and MCs between songs cheer the local gangs, such as "Maximum respect to all the young lists " or " Big up all junglists ". These tapes were circulating the early 1990s in England, the Big- ups were sampled and used in own productions. Since the term Jungle also independent of the actual origin sounds good, could not get the name.

In England the name Jungle is used to this day synonymous with drum and bass. This stems primarily from the large former success of the Jungle. In addition, was Drum and bass that quickly emancipated itself to its own genre, first as a pure sub- style of the Jungle. The original Jungle producers Caribbean origin is therefore often referred to as demarcation Ragga Jungle.

Stylistics

Jungle consists of electronically accelerated, pitched and / or chopped beats. Especially the Breaks old radio plays were used to. Especially popular is this the so-called Amen Break. Another break is used like the the track " Apache" Michael Viner 's Incredible Bongo band. As a contrast to the fast, syncopated beats half as fast, so played in Half Time bassline is usually used. Compared to today's drum and bass, the breakbeats had a metallic rattling, seemingly tumbling sound.

Jungle Tracks are generally kept at a pace of around 170 BPM. This velocity is chosen so that the human ear is already trying hard to hear the heavy beats in half the speed. This contrast is highlighted by fast drums and the slow bass line even further and makes for a good part of the appeal of this style of. The same effect is also used in drum and bass to carry the adapted, however, the constant acceleration of modern dance music is still played a lot faster. Most of the first half of 1990 resulting Jungle tracks were accompanied by a toasted MC. Even in the texts the connecting factors to Jamaica Raggamuffin were very strong.

Development

Jungle was developed in the first half of the 1990s in England by musicians Caribbean origin and produced. There he achieved such popularity that time, several Jungle tracks were represented simultaneously in the British charts. Many of the first Jungle Tunes were produced with primitive means, such as Some Justice of Aphrodite and Micky Finn, which was produced on two Amiga 500 with the help of a tracker.

Simultaneous with the success of the original Jungles producers had already developed the Jungle style. The music is minimalist, especially the ragga elements disappeared almost completely. Darkside, a subgenre of the Jungle, for example, put on a very dark atmosphere. 1993 produced Goldie the track terminator. He is regarded as the blueprint of a new style in the mid- 1990s was to replace Jungle: Drum and Bass.

Even Bob Marley led to his concert tours (especially 1979) an element of the later jungle and drum -and- bass style; For example, the instrumental middle parts of the songs " The Heathen " (eg in Toronto 1979) and " Exodus" (eg in Oakland 1979) included continuously rehearsed electronic sound distortion, while Aston Barrett delivered the swirling bass line and Carlton Barrett on the Drums in the Rockers style with breakbeat -like improvisations.
