History

The design of the Alero took the design study Alero Alpha anticipated, which was shown in 1997 as a futuristically styled sports coupe at the auto showroom.

The standard vehicle was a special four-door sedan and two-door coupe with a four-or six -cylinder engine. Chassis and engines he shared with the Pontiac Grand Am, Chevrolet Malibu and Oldsmobile Cutlass, as all models were based on the N platform from General Motors.

During the four-cylinder engine was available with both manual transmission and automatic transmission, the six-cylinder variant could be acquired only with automatic transmission. The vehicles are equipped as standard with an extensive comfort features.

A weakness of the vehicle is its braking system. For a large proportion of the vehicles, the front brake discs give under load vibrations to the body continues. GM or Opel often exchanged just the brake discs and pads, which usually did not fix the problem permanently. The brake lines were very prone to rust.

The Alero was marketed in some European countries as the Chevrolet Alero, but here was only available as a sedan.

The Alero production ended with the 500th Special Series Final last 500 Aleros had special emblems, whose design is modeled on historical Oldsmobile logos, dark red metallic paint and a badge with serial number.
