Ole Andreas Øverland

Ole Andreas Øverland ( born March 17, 1855 in Trondheim, † June 20, 1911 in Kristiania ) was a Norwegian historian.

Family and Youth

His parents were of the Tobacco Workers and purchase Ole Andreas Øverland (1819-1871) and his wife Birgitte Gjertine Moe ( 1818-1881 ). In his first marriage married on January 24, 1884 in Kristiania Charlotte Louise Weltzin (24 January 1864-28. April 1900 ), daughter of Representative and majors of the militia Joachim Ludvig Weltzin (* 1828) and his wife Karen Judithe Jakobine Tausan (* 1832 ). His second wife he married on 17 March 1902, the former special education teacher Oline Regine Brun (31 December 1858-25. December 1913 ), daughter of the merchant Ole Christian Brun (* 1829) and his wife Anne Størvold (* 1832).

Øverland grew up in Trondheim. He first went to a junior high school, then in the Cathedral School in Trondheim. In 1873 he laid the exam from artium. Two years later he was philosophicum the exam. He then worked as an assistant teacher in Trondheim. In 1878 he moved to Christiania, where he completed his philosophical and historical knowledge. But he had his whole life poor health, which is why he took no state exam. He also had success with his historical work.

His historical works

His first work Armfeldts Tog Nordenfjelds 1718 appeared in 1879. 1879 to 1885 he was employed in the National Archives, where he repeatedly discovered new material which he worked in his later works. In 1880 he received a scholarship from the legacy of Peter Andreas Munch, which gave him greater financial independence. 1885 to 1895 he published his seven-volume Illustreret Norges History, which will handle events until 1814. Proposed, the project had Jacob B. Bull, because this task had so far no one tackled. The work was first published in monthly supplements for Folkebladet, was in the Bull chief editor. Some well-known historians, led by Ernst Sars requested financial support for the work, which was also granted so that Øverland was able to work full time to it in the Storting. Norges histories appeared as a 12 -volume illustrated deluxe edition were sold out of the 20 000 copies.

Øverland worked hard and extremely productive. He was also a seven -volume edition of Norges out Historiske fortællinger ( Historical narratives Norway ), he wrote Norges historie 1814-1902, Da VORT kongepar com and Utvalgte Historiske fortællinger. He also wrote special literature: Vikingtog above Vinlandsfærder, Korstogenes History and De norske bygdemagasiner ( The Norwegian urban supply magazines ). In the context of labor history, he wrote a seminal work on the temperance, as well as a number of biographies and genealogies. But also in the field of sociology, he conducted research. He worked on the witch trials. He also wrote textbooks and was a sought speaker, especially for continuing education courses for teachers.

Øverland among the most prolific historians of Norway, both in terms of the scope of its work, as well as the quality.
