OLE DB

OLE DB ( Object Linking and Embedding, Database, also OLEDB or OLE - DB called ) is a technology developed by Microsoft programming interface based on the Component Object Model ( COM) for standardized access to different sources of data, ranging from simple text files from Excel folders, SQL databases to object databases.

OLE DB was developed as the successor to ODBC. With ODBC, a uniform access to relational databases has been achieved with the query language SQL. OLE DB extends the functionality of ODBC considerably, providing a more standardized access to disparate data sources is possible. However, OLE DB is also much more complex, and the goal of universal access to data that would allow the programmer to make its applications without regard to the type of data storage is free, only partially achieved. Microsoft has announced that the " Denali " version of SQL Server will be the last version to an OLE DB provider for the time after the ODBC provider is recommended.
