Oleksandriia, Kirovohrad Oblast

Olexandrija (Ukrainian Олександрія; Russian Александрия / Alexandrija ) is a city in Kirovohrad Oblast in central Ukraine with 82,181 (2013 ) inhabitants.

Geography and climate

Geographical location

Olexandija is an important transport hub in the Kirovohrad Oblast in the historical region of the "Wild Field" on the banks of Inhulez, a tributary of the Dnieper, and the Beresiwka, which flows into the Inhulez.

The city is located on the highway, a stretch of the template: RSIGN / Maintenance / EU e- inclusion and on the highway that leads to Poltava. The city also has a station on the railway line from Kiev to Dnepropetrovsk. The distance to Kirovohrad, the capital of the oblast, is 75 km, to Schowti Vody 61 km, Switlowodsk is 64 km away, while Kiev, there are 323 kilometers.

Climate

The climate is temperate continental. The summers are long and hot, the winters are short. Rainfall is unevenly distributed over the year. In the summer, fall 336 mm, in winter only 177 mm of precipitation.

History

The city was founded in 1746 as a settlement Ussiwka by Cossacks. In 1755, Serbs began to settle in Ussiwka and since 1784 the place has been called Olexandrija. From 1805-1920 the city was the administrative center of the Ujesd Alexandrija in the government of Kherson.

The development of trade and commerce and the development of the railway in 1869, has helped make Alexandria grew into a small town.

1919 Olexandrija was the center of the uprising against Soviet rule in Ukraine under Ataman Grigoriev Nikifor.

The city was occupied on August 6, 1941, to December 6, 1943 by troops of the German Wehrmacht and was named Alexandria. During this time, the city was the capital of the district Alexandria Ingulez within the Reich Commissariat Ukraine.

In football, the city is represented by the association PFK Olexandrija, who, having played in the top division in Ukrainian football, the Ukrainian Premjer - Liha in the season 2011/2012, in the 2012/2013 season back in the second highest league, the Perscha Liha plays.

Olexandrija is the administrative seat of the homonymous Rajons, but is not itself a part of him. The Rajon Olexandrija (Ukrainian Олександрійський район ) has 37 202 inhabitants ( 2011) and an area of 1,854 km ². The population density is 20 inhabitants per km ².
