Olenekian

The Olenekian ( often shortened to the German Olenek ) is in the Earth's upper stage of the Lower Triassic chronostratigraphic. The stage begins geochronological before about 251.2 million years ago and ending 247 200 000 years. It thus lasted about 3.6 million years. The Olenekian precedes the indusium; it is followed by the Anisian.

Naming and history

The type locality is situated near the river Olenek in Siberia.

Definition

The beginning of the stage is defined, the first appearance of the conodont species Neospathodus waageni and the first appearance of the ammonite genera Flemingites and Euflemingites. The first appearance of the conodont species Chiosella timorensis marks the end of the stage. A GSSP (global type locality and type profile ) has not yet been determined.

Subdivision

Regionally, the Olenekian is still divided into the Lower School Smithium and Spathium. The Olenekian was formerly with the indusium part of the Scythian stage ( Skythium ), which is not an official level, however, more and only regionally ( in the Alps) is being used.

Situation in Central Europe during the Olenekian

In the Lower Triassic occurs in Central Europe for the deposition of terrestrial sediments of sandstone.
