Olentangy River in Columbus

Olentangy River within the Einzugsbebiets of the Scioto River

The Olentangy River is the largest left tributary of the Scioto River in the U.S. state of Ohio.

Its source is located in Crawford County approximately 3.2 km northeast of the city of Galion. It first flows in a westerly direction, bends east of Bucyrus community to the south, flows through the Delaware Lake and reached after about 90 kilometers from the campus of Ohio State University, before flowing into downtown Columbus, the Scioto River.

The Olentangy River was originally called Whetstone River, was built in 1833 but renamed as a result of a law by which the ancient Indian river names should be introduced. The word Olentangy means in the language of the Delaware River the red face paint. This river is a drinking water reservoir for the residents of Delaware County. A section of about 35 km of the River Olentary was awarded by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources with the predicate State Scenic River and placed under special protection.

At the headwaters of the Olentangy River took place during the Crawford campaign in June 1782 a battle between the troops Crawfords against Indians and British allied with them instead. In the Battle of the Olentangy three Americans were killed and eight wounded; probably much higher losses of the Indians and the British are unknown.
