Olevano sul Tusciano

Olevano sul Tusciano is a municipality with 6865 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Salerno in the Campania region. The etymology of the place name is uncertain: proposed discharges of olibanus (rich in olive trees ) or from the personal name Olivius.

Geography

The town is located north of Battipaglia in the narrow valley of the Tusciano on the southern slopes of the Monti Picentini. The seat of the municipality is Ariano, more districts are Monticelli and Salitto. The municipality is a member of the following associations and organizations: Comunità Montana Picentini; Regione Agraria n 7 - Medio Sele, Parco dei Monti Picentini, Associazione delle Città della Mela Annurca, Associazione Nazionale Città Dell'Olio, Associazione Nazionale delle Città della Nocciola

The neighboring municipalities are Acerno, Battipaglia, Campagna, Eboli, Montecorvino Rovella.

Economy

In agriculture, wine, olives and nuts are produced, along with poultry farming plays a role. Jobs is at the hydroelectric power station of the Italian energy company ENEL, to which Atel Holding holds a share of 20%. Commuters working in the industrial area of Battipaglia.

History

In Roman times, the Via Appia and the Via Popilia led over Olevano. The fort was one of Olevano since Norman times to church property of the Archdiocese of Salerno.

Attractions

  • Grotta di S. Michele: stalactite cave with a single-nave chapel with three apses, are preserved in the wall paintings in the Byzantine- style. The frescoes are from the 10th and 11th centuries.
