Olger B. Burtness

Olger Burtness Burton ( born March 14, 1884 in Mekinock, Grand Forks County, North Dakota; † January 20, 1960 in Grand Forks, North Dakota ) was an American politician. Between 1921 and 1933 he represented the first electoral district of the State of North Dakota in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years and political rise

Olger Burtness attended the common schools and then the University of North Dakota, to among other things, he studied law until 1907. After his admission to the bar he practiced this profession in Grand Forks. Burtness was a member of the Republican Party. Between 1911 and 1916 he was a prosecutor in Grand Forks County. In the years 1916, 1936 and 1948 he was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions relevant. Between 1919 and 1920 he was a member of the House of Representatives from North Dakota.

Congressman

In the congressional elections of 1920 Burtness was elected to succeed John Miller Baer in the U.S. House of Representatives. After some re- election he was able to complete a total of six legislative periods between 4 March 1921 and 3 March 1933. For the elections of 1932 he was not nominated by his party; therefore he had to resign in March 1933 from the Congress.

After his time in Washington Burtness again worked as a lawyer. In the years 1936 and 1937 he was also counsel for the city of Grand Forks. Since 1950 until his death in 1960 he was a judge in the first legal district of North Dakota.
