Oliba Cabreta

Oliba cabretas († 990 ), was a Count of Cerdanya, Conflent and Besalu from the House of Barcelona. He was the third of the four sons of Miró the Younger, Count of Cerdanya, Conflent and Besalu, and his wife Ava. His brothers were Sunifred II, Wilfried II and Miró Bonfill.

Oliba 966 inherited his brother Sunifred II in the counties of Cerdanya and Conflent and 984 Miró Bonfill in the county of Besalu. His surname means something like " goat " (Catalan Gabra ), because he is said to have possessed the habit, like a buck with his feet to scratch holes in the ground as soon as he flew into a rage. This should clarify his warlike and violent nature. He led a long-standing war against Roger I of Carcassonne to the landscapes capcir, Donezan, peyrepertuse and Sault. 988 Oliba was made a pilgrimage to Rome to confess there against the holy Romuald his sins and was moved by this renunciation of worldly life. He joined as a Benedictine monk of the Abbey of Montecassino, where he died in 990.

Olibas wife was Ermengarde, with whom he had four sons:

  • Bernard I. Tallaferro († 1020), Count of Besalu.
  • Wilfried II († 1046/49 ), Count of Cerdanya and Conflent.
  • Oliba the Abbot († 1046 ), Count of Berga, abbot of Sant Miquel de Santa Maria de Ripoll and Cuixa, bishop of Vic ( Osona ).
  • Berengar († 1003), Bishop of Elne.
